THE COMMANDMENTS FOR ANIMATORS

The ten commandments will help you to be an effective group animator. study carefully, reflect on them and put them into practise and you will see your sessions will become productive and enjoyable for your youngsters and for yourself.

1. THOU SHALT PREPARE FOR THE SESSIONS CAREFULLY

* Go through the material before hand
* Understand the expected objectives Study the instructions and guidelines
* Visualize the procedure step-by-step
* Reflect on the input you would like to give
* Get the materials required ready in time

2. THOU SHALT KNOW THE DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS, NEEDS AND DESIRES, PROBLEMS AND STRUGGLES OF YOUNG PEOPLE.

* This is important if you are to talk to the young people on the same wave length.

3. THOU SHALT LISTEN

* Listen without judging, analyzing, probing, correcting, solving problem and giving advice
* Listen with empathy, understanding and love
* Listen to the feeling behind the words
* Listen with your ears, eyes and your heart.

4. THOU SHALT MODEL OPENNESS

* Be open and honest when you share your experience, ideas and feelings.
* Model and encourage experiential sharing and not mere intellectual discussion.
* Accept their feelings and ideas, even if you don't agree with them.
* Be ready to challenge them -always with respect- on positions that are inconsistent, erroneous and unclear.
* Offer as much of yourself as you feel comfortable in sharing.

5. THOU SHALT BE ACCEPTING AND AFFIRMING

* offer understanding, acceptance, support and appreciation for their ideas, feelings and efforts
* See yourself as a gift given and see the youngsters too as gifts to be greatfully received.

6. THOU SHALT UNDERSTANDING THEIR LANGUAGE

* Young people have thier own language, expression and idiom. You have to understand them.
* Identify with the young. Try to put yourself into their shoes, walk in them and see their world as they see it.

7. THOU SHALT BE FIRM

* Maintain an ordrely, controlled atmosphere, even during fun times.
* Do not let anyone block the process of learning in the group.
* Do not allow the paticipants to be disrespectful to you or to one another.
* Keep the atmosphere warn, friendly and free, but disciplined.

8. THOU SHALT BE FLEXIBLE

* Be willing to adjust and change plans at a short notice.
* Be ready to change pre-planned sessions according to the need and mood of the participants.
* Be prepared to shorten or extend sessions, divide them into parts, and redefine objectives, if need be.

9. THOU SHALT CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE OF WARMTH, JOY AND FREEDOM

* Create an atmosphere, where they will feel free to share, to confirm or disagree, to question or challenge one another's opinions.
* Create a climate, where they can feel free to share theri concern and fears, express thier doubts and questions, without the fear of being judged and condemned.

10. THOU SHALT HAVE FAITH

* Believe that God is actively involved in the lives of young people.
* Believe in the goodness, gift and good will of the young people.
* Believe that all your efforts will bear fruit some day.
